Marvel’s Morbius – Overview, Plot, MCU Connection, Release Date

A few days ago, when Marvel fans were eagerly waiting for Spider-Man – No way home, Marvel dropped a new movie trailer called MORBIUS. But who is Morbius? Is he a hero or a villain? How is he connected to MCU? We’ll try to answer all these questions in this article.

Morbius

Morbius is a famous character from Marvel’s Spider-Man comics and featured in the old Spider-man animated series ‘Morbius – The living Vampire.’ In the trailer, we see Jared Leto starring as Dr. Michael Morbius and Michael Keaton, Matt Smith & Tyrese Gibson in the supporting cast.

MORBIUS: Hero or Villain

In comics, Michael Morbius is the only character suffering from a rare blood disease, but many people are suffering from the same disease as Morbius in the film.

He tries to save them, which makes him a hero In people’s eyes. But it all ends up him becoming a vampire. He becomes bloodthirsty and eventually starts drinking the blood of bad guys, which turns him into an Anti-hero.

The Plot

Dr. Michael Morbius is a noble price-wining biochemist suffering from a rare blood disease. He experiments on a bat to overcome this disease, but the situation goes wrong when that bat bites him back, turning him into a vampire.

The trailer includes Eco location, Bat Radar, Super strength, flying, and other powers that will appear in the movie. This character’s origin is from Greece; all these events occur there.

MCU connection: Will Spider-Man appear in MORBIUS?

The most exciting part of the trailer is the appearance of ‘Michael Keaton.’ Many fans think he is playing Vulture, the same super-villain that appeared in the MCU film Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Michael Keaton

However, if Keaton plays his Vulture role, it could open the door to Marvel’s distinct universes. That raises many questions as Venom and Morbius exist in a cinematic universe that Sony has created where Tom Holland’s version of Spidey currently exists.

Following the events of Loki & Spider-Man – No Way Home, The concept of Multiverse is already teased in MCU, so people will not get surprised if they see Venom or any other Spider-Man villain in this movie.

A recent fan theory told us that Keaton would be playing a version of Vulture from Sony’s Marvel Universe and thus will not be the same character who battled Spider-Man and was imprisoned later in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Keaton is not the only Spider-Man reference connection. In the first trailer, we can see a picture of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man costume as well.

They have shown a newspaper featuring a villain, Rhino and Black Cat, in the trailer. Both these characters appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But the newspaper Daily Bugle is the same as that occurred in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man.

Further, looking at the picture of Tobey Maguire’s suit, it has the word ‘Murderer’ painted over it, referencing the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, confusing the audience further. These could be easter eggs or some multiverse secret linking many Spider-Man universes.

MORBIUS: Villain

Matt Smith will appear as the main villain in this movie, his name in the film is Loxias Crown. He works as one of the hydra agents. As Morbius comes to know about him, he bits Loxias Crown and turns him into a vampire, after which he is called ‘Hunger‘ in the comics.

But in the movie, the origin of Loxias is different. He has the same disease as Michael, and as he sees Michael getting cured, Loxias catches him and performs genetic experiments on Michael. As a result, Loxias turns into “Hunger.”

Release date

Sony has pushed the release date for Morbius once again. While the film was previously scheduled for 28th January 2022, it’s now set for 1st April 2022.

Like other Marvel movies, this film is no exception to delays. Morbius originally had its release set for 31st July 2020 in the UK and the US. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it got delayed several times.
